Third Year Clerkship

FME-30000 - Core Clerkship in Family Medicine
Core Clerkship for 3rd Year UTHSC Students Only

This 6-week rotation includes work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Housing will be provided for M3 students at no cost if needed. This is provided by the University of Tennessee.

Clerkship Goals and Objectives Overview

The goal of the Family Medicine Clerkship is to teach the concept and practice of family-centered primary health care in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. Upon completing the clerkship, the student should be able to:

1. Identify the etiology, appropriate intervention, treatment, and possible complications of patients presenting with common problems in the clinical setting.
2. Describe the advantages of an integrated and ongoing physician-patient relationship and the value of a centralized approach in an ambulatory setting to clinical case management.
3. Explain the role of health assessment and health maintenance in primary care practice for the prevention of illness.
4. Discuss the economic, medico-legal, and personnel issues typically encountered by family physicians.

The clerkship accomplishes these objectives primarily through supervised clinical experiences.  In addition, the tasks include didactic sessions, a student presentation, and the final examination.

At the end of this rotation each student should feel comfortable:

1. Critically reviewing literature for implementation of evidence based medical practice.
2. Reading an ECG and formulating a management plan for acute myocardial infarction.
3. Identifying and managing common ambulatory pediatric and adult problems.
4. Identifying and managing common hospital diagnoses.
5. Discussing appropriate preventative health interventions and screening tests.
6. Discussing routine prenatal and newborn care including labor and delivery.

FME-40150 Family Medicine Junior Internship
Elective Rotation for 4th Year UTHSC and Visiting Students

Clerkship Director:  Dr. Amanda Miller

The JI Clerkship is a four week clinical experience during which time students participate in a unique breadth of patient care in the context of family and community. The family physician serves all aspects of patient care involving both inpatient and outpatient settings, ranging from the hospital, labor and delivery, and even the nursing home. The JI Clerkship is a full-time learning experience, typically mirroring the family physician preceptor and including both weekend responsibilities and night call. Students have several assignments to complete as well as assigned readings during the JI Clerkship.  Visiting students will apply to this family medicine clerkship via​ Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO®).
